Minecraft was released in 2011, and to this day, it has more than 126 million active players each month.

Minecraft was the most impactful game to be released in the 2010s and is a staple of the decade.

Loyal fans of the game have put countless hours into mastering the diverse landscapes and all three of the dimensions, but a death or two is always bound to happen along the way.

Can You Starve To Death In Minecraft?

Yes, you can starve to death in Minecraft if you don't eat.

Your hunger bar is represented by little icons that look like meat on a bone.

In the bottom center of your screen, your hunger bar sits above your quick-draw inventory, across from your health bar, which is represented by hearts.

If you do not eat when your hunger bar gets below three pieces of meat, your character will be too exhausted to run.

No one wants to try and run on an empty stomach.

After your hunger bar is empty, your character will take one-half point of damage every couple of seconds.

You will die if you do not eat in MInecraft.

How To Find Food In Minecraft

There are 40 different food options for a player to choose from.

Depending on the map you spawn with, you could have quick access to most of the food options.

It's important to find food quickly after you spawn because, with all that your character does in a day, they get hungry quickly.

The easiest way to get food is to either hunt an animal or scavenge fruits and vegetables that may grow on the ground.

You don't even need a weapon to hunt.

If your hands are good enough tools to take down trees, you know your hands can take down a cow or sheep.

If you are in a biome with wolves, foxes, or axolotls, you may even find fresh meat just lying on the ground from one of their hunts.

The wolves will eat sheep, the foxes hunt chickens, and the axolotls will fight any aggressive underwater spawn, such as Drowned Zombies and Guardians.

Both of the axolotls' prey are known for dropping fish when they are slain.

If you're looking to create a reliable food source near your home base, you may want to consider a farm.

By clearing out tall grass, you can receive wheat seeds.

With wheat, you can make bread, which is a solid food source.

Wheat can also be used to lure and breed sheep, cows, horses, llamas, and mountain goats.

Wheat seeds can also be used to befriend parrots or to lure and breed chickens.

If the farming life is appealing to you, you can also plant things such as watermelons, pumpkins, potatoes, beetroots, carrots, and sweet berries.

Carrots can be used to lure and breed pigs. If you happen to have a saddle and use a carrot to craft a carrot on a stick, you can also ride pigs.

Fishing Works In Every Biome

Not every biome has tall grass or animals that hunt to help you get some food.

Biomes like the desert and the arctic can often feel like barren wastelands, especially when you're on the hunt for food.

However, you'll be just fine as long as you can find some string and a stick.

Fashion yourself a fishing rod and you'll eat for a lifetime.

Every time you fish, your wait time will decrease by 20%.

With a little dedication, you can get more fish than you'll know what to do with.

The two most common fish you'll get are cod and salmon.

Be sure to wait until you have cooked your fish in a furnace or smoker before eating it.

Cooking food increases the amount of value a food has, meaning it will fill up your hunger bar with fewer units.

Fishing isn't just good for gathering food quickly.

You can receive a multitude of rare items and enchanted items that can help you along your journey.

You can fish out things like saddles, enchantment books, enchanted fishing rods, enchanted bows, nautilus shells, and even name tags.

The best fishing rod you can receive from fishing is one with the mending enchantment.

The mending enchantment turns experience points that are earned by using the rod into health points for the fishing rod.

There's also the enchantment, Luck of the Sea, which increases a player's chance of getting rare items while fishing.

It comes in three levels and can help you get copious amounts of enchantment books for your other tools and armory.

The Best Foods

Not all foods in Minecraft are created equal.

All of the 40 different food options available to a player can be broken into five nourishment groups: poor, low, normal, good, and supernatural.

The nourishment groups are solely based on how much of your hunger bar is filled when eating the food, ignoring any special abilities that foods may give you.

The poor nourishment food groups differ between the two different versions of Minecraft: Java and Bedrock.

The Java Edition of Minecraft is limited to only PC players.

In the Java Edition, the worst foods for nourishment are cake, cookies, glow berries, bottles of honey, pufferfish, raw cod, raw salmon, rotten flesh, spider eyes, sweet berries, and tropical fish.

In the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft, sweet berries are replaced by dried kelp in this category, but all of the other foods remain the same.

The next nourishment level is low nourishment.

In Bedrock, apples, chorus fruits, melon slices, poisonous potatoes, raw potatoes, pumpkin pie, raw beef, raw chicken, raw mutton, raw pork chops, raw rabbit, and sweet berries are all considered to be low in nutritional value.

In Java, the sweet berries have been swapped out with dried kelp, but all of the other foods are the same for this category.

For foods of normal nourishment or higher, the two versions of Minecraft are identical.

Normal foods are baked potatoes, beetroot, beetroot soup, bread, carrots, cooked chicken, cooked rabbit, mushroom stew, rabbit stew, and suspicious stew.

There are only four foods that are considered to have good nutritional value: cooked mutton, cooked pork chops, cooked salmon, and steak.

The best nourishment you can receive is from supernatural foods, which are golden carrots, golden apples, and golden enchanted apples.

Magical Foods

While most players may consider whatever food fills them up the most to be the best food, veteran players know that the special effects that some foods have can make them more valuable than those that simply fill you up.

While Supernatural foods are still considered some of the best in the game, in the other ranks, there's a bit more competition.

If you have ever ventured into the End, homeland of the Endermen, you may have found odd, purple chorus trees and picked their fruit.

When chomping on a chorus fruit, a player can be teleported at random.

This implies that the Endermen's ability to teleport is caused by their diet.

Another food with odd powers is the suspicious stew.

Suspicious stew is the only food that cannot be found in the creative mode inventory.

In order to create the stew, you will need a bowl, a red mushroom, a brown mushroom, and any flower.

Each flower gives the stew a different special effect, but not all of the flowers are helpful.

Dandelions and Blue Orchids cause food to nourish you less and Azure Bluets cause blindness.

Lilies of the Valley poison you, and tulips make you weaker.

If you go to the End and pick yourself some Wither Roses, don't put them in your soup, or you'll wither away.

Allium increases your fire resistance.

Cornflowers give your character a jump boost.

The Oxeye Daisy gives you plenty of health regeneration.

Poppies give you night vision!

Not all effects that food can have are good.

Consumables like poisonous potatoes, pufferfish, and spider eyes can also poison you, taking away health.

Bottles of honey are able to cure poison and nourish your character.

Eating rotten flesh will cause your character to become as ravenously hungry as a zombie and can starve your character.

Curing The Undead With Food

During your Minecraft adventures, you may notice that not all zombies are the same.

Some zombies look more like villagers than normal zombies.

Before you slice them down like all of the other undead, you can bring some back to life.

Food is the key to their resurrection.

First, trap the zombie inside of any fully covered structure.

Even a nice, dirt hut will be enough to keep the zombie villager from sizzling in the sun.

The rest of this process could take longer than one night cycle, so it is best to keep them safe.

If you are trying to cure a ghost town that may have been turned, keep them in their houses and fill any holes in their houses with dirt.

You can always come back to do renovations later.

Then, you will need to have the zombie villager gain the weakness effect.

You can do it yourself by using a splash potion of weakness or shooting them with one arrow tipped with the weakness effect.

You can also have a witch throw a potion of weakness at the zombie villagers, if you don't have a way to make any yourself.

In Java, you can also have a creeper explode near them to give them the weakness effect.

Once your zombie villager has succumbed to the weakness effect, it is time to feed them a golden apple.

You will know as soon as you give the villager the apple if you have done it properly.

The zombie villager will begin to shake rapidly and will start to make a loud sizzling sound.

The transformation will take three to five minutes.

While the zombie villager is transforming, it will behave as a normal zombie, meaning that it will still attack the player and burn to death in the sun.

Food Is Crucial

If you want to be able to survive in the world of Minecraft, you're going to need food.

Just like the rest of Minecraft, how you go about achieving your goals is completely up to you and always unique, each time you play.

There's always a way to get food, as long as you're creative enough.

Food doesn't just nourish you and keep you from starving, it can help you see at night, give you strength or mobility boosts, and even help you teleport around like an Enderman.

Food is so useful that it can even cure zombification and give you some friendly, new neighbors.

Don't underestimate the importance of food in your playthrough!
